NAIK - IN THE SHADOWS OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN

After years of slaving in the studio, local producer NAIK (Nature And Its Killers) is finally set to unleash his debut album 'In The Shadow Of Thunder Mountain' upon us. An exotic blend of psychedelic guitars, twisted samples, booming synths and crunchy beats, this release is set to knock socks straight off.

With foundations in sample based music, this first offering from NAIK takes the musical collage concept one step further. The addition of  live instrumentation and progressive song structures has seen Naik forge his way into uncharted territory with this release, developing a unique sound that owes as much to psych-rock as it does to hip-hop.

The album was intricately compiled over a number of years at Naik's personal studio and then mixed by Heliocentrics producer Mike Burnham, making sure every bit of analogue crunchiness was preserved. Naik’s live show has developed a reputation for itself as well. The band's performance supporting People Under The Stairs was voted number 1 Australian performance of 2008 in Drum Media by reviewer Jo Lettenmaier. The live show features NAIK himself on MPC, Guitar, Bass, and Keys with producer Kit-Pop on the turntables and effects, as well as Astep on the drums.

The first single from the album, The Last Parade, is an upbeat psychedelic groove guaranteed to get your foot tapping. Triumphant Flutes are complemented by an addictive bassline, while harmonized vocals from yesteryear and fuzzed out guitars provide the driving force behind the track.

Having originated as a downtempo jam between Naik and his live drummer Adam Stepanovski, the potential of the bassline and drum pattern as a double time piece was eventually realised and the track took a sharp turn in another direction. Some tasteful soul samples and dirty guitar playing later, the track had begun to take shape.

An obscure Australian folk record provided the inspiration for the breakdown and gave the track the full and dynamic structure that it needed. Finally some synths and effects were added to taste and there it was, The Last Parade, a melting pot of ideas and styles all seasoned with Naik's signature herbs and spices.
